I am wondering if regular small doses of benzos cause weight gain (or at least inhibit it's loss)

By small amount I mean .50 - 1mg of Klonopin per day
(which really I just started) before that I was taking xanax .50-.75 per day for a couple months.

I exercise a lot (30 min. treadmill walks mid day Mon-Fri,
and hit the gym an additional 1-3 times per week for stairmaster sessions and weight training)

I eat well, not overweight but my midsection does not seem to budge.

Could it be my metabolism is still recovering from being on LExapro for 4 months - I just quit about a month and a half ago OR is it the benzos? I take no other drugs.

Any input is appreciated

I think (and I'm not a doctor) is/was the lexapro. Celexa (a very similar drug) made me gain 15-20 lbs. It took me two years to loose that weight.

I've heard klonopin can cause weight gain also, but nothing like ssri(s)

I don't think there is any clear answer to that, it looks like it varys between people. I have read a few web sites that say that stress will cause weight gain. On the other hand the drug clearing house site says:

Low to moderate doses:
loss of appetite,
constipation or diarrhoea.
Feelings of euphoria or isolation,
emotional depression may also occur.

Higher doses:
muscle weakness
skin rashes
weight gain
increased risk of accidents
increased risk of falling
sexual problems
menstrual irregularities
and so on...

What were you taking when you put the weight on? Many people complain of weight gain from Lexapro. I haven't heard anything about benzos and weight gain. Stress is known to cause-mid section weight gain because the release of cortisol causes the body to store weight in that area.

I have never read that. Everything factored in though, even being on a certain medication, isn't the end result the same? If you eat more calories then you burn you will gain weight. If you burn more calories then you eat you will lose weight. (Unless you have a medical condition like a thyroid problem). I have heard that weight gain by some medications is because it causes people to feel more hungry and it's not actually the medicine itself? Perhaps I am wrong but it would appear to make sense that if a person is taking in less or more calories then burning they are either going to lose or gain weight.

I don't know about the Lexapro, except that I heard it has a lot of side effects.

Any benzo is going to slow down your metabolism because it is a depressant, so I would watch what I eat when taking them. They are also anti-nausea, so you might feel like eating a bit more than you would if you weren't on them.

Good Luck!

Yes, Benzo's give you the munchies. It's not that intense however, i've taken a klonopin and been a bit hungry after it kicked in. Also, they use benzo's in Vet Medicine to increase the appetite in animals. I want a Benzo and some blueberries now!

I haven't found that benzos give me the munchies. I've actually lost weight since starting Valium and Xanax when needed. I know I was a stress eater. So if I feel a freakout creeping up, I take xanax. If I know I'm gonna be in a situation that puts me on edge (like my mom or the in-laws) I take xanax and valium. I like the valium for the muscle relaxing properties. It's good for when the Soma/carisoprodol is low or I want something before I go to bed without the use of Ambien.

Well, Stevie Nicks is still swearing that Klonopin made her fat.

She doesn't mention the fact that she also stopped doing an eight-ball of cocaine everyday at the same time she started Klonopin though:)

If the benzo type drugs were causing you to sleep more or be less active, that could cause weight gain.

My Cat takes Valium (she's high strung) and 10-15 minutes after her dose (1/4 of a 2mg tab), she runs to the food bowel and gorges. And she's one fat cat.

That's easy. Just don't eat cat food after taking valium and you'll have nothing to worry about.

Seriously, if your cat was anxious, yes, a valium would make her relax and get hungry. Just like some other things we know would.

Like the previous poster said sure, the med itself won't cause you to gain weight. The thing I have found is that it relaxes you and increases your urge to eat sweets, like icecream ,chocolate, all kinds of junkfood and even have more of an appitite at the dinner table. When your upset and have anxiety about anything or just general anxiety disorder you tend to be not hungry,in an up set state you dont even feel like eating. That said yes Valium Xanax, all benzos can lead to a gain of weight which actually means your feeling healthy in many ways..Thats only my personal opinion as a 190lb 53 year old man.

Personally, I care less about what I eat when I am on benzos. That slice of pizza looks delicious, why not? I'm carefree!

Also, when I was on benzos, I did gain a lot of weight.

I thought I was the only one this happend to. Good to know I'm not. I rarely take benzos, just when I can't sleep and it's usally on a hydro break. I take it right before bed in order to try and curb the eat fest. But it doesn't work. I end up laying in bed fantasizing about food and then wobble into the kitchen and start to stuff my face. When I feel good an full, I wander back to bed. But not before re-brushing my teeth first Then it's off to sleepy land for me. Of course, I wake up in the morning feeling a ton of guilt for all of that junk I ate.

Training involves muscle contractions; the last thing you want your muscles to do is relax. Muscle weakness is a side-effect of benzodiazepines (not surprisingly), as is tiredness, which is the last thing you need when training.

Stretching following exercise and warming down is better in preventing stiffness than taking benzodiazepines.

Actually, relaxaxtion of your muscles AFTER a heavy workout is key to getting bigger muscles. Of course, benzos decrease adrenalin, so you might not feel the necessary energy.

It's actually during rest periods where muscle gains take place, as damaged muscle cells repair bigger and stronger. But rest is all that is needed - as in do not work the muscles you have trained - benzodiazepines do not provide any advantage in this regard.

On the subject of weight gain, nervousness suppresses appetite, so if you suffer from nervousness, benzodiazepines may help you eat more. But they don't directly cause weight gain.

Completely agree, intense anxiety is a very effective appetite suppressant. Misery for weight loss is a horrible trade off IMO. I personally have not noticed any difference in weight on benzos. SSRI's on the other hand have been shown to cause weight gain and the theory is they slow down metabolism.

Just a humorous story, my father got Montezuma's revenge in Mexico many years back. He was sick for over a month and lost 15lbs. off his relatively slim frame. He actually crawled to the bathroom one night to throw up, passed out, and broke a finger. All of the men he told about that month commented how awful it sounded. All of the women he told about it said "why can't that happen to me." \:D
